About
My name is Debbie, I am the mother of three beautiful children. My eldest child Jason, pictured here with me, is forever 35 years old.
I am located in Perth, Western Australia.
My Journey
I’m now almost 8 years down this pathway of grief and as a fellow grieving parent, I have lived experience with the devastation of child loss.
In the early stages of my grief I sought help through a number of counsellors and psychologists but there was a wide gap between what I was going through and the level of understanding of the practitioner, through no fault of their own. It was simply due to the fact that they had never experienced the loss of a child.
I took offence to the comparisons of the loss of a grandmother, a parent, sibling or a pet. I listened to the explanation of the misused Elisabeth Kubler Ross model of the five stages of grief, wondering how I could ever arrive at acceptance.
Some tried to treat me for depression but I wasn't depressed, I was grieving.
The fact is that 94% of parents carry enduring grief for their lost child for the rest of their lives.
The gravity of child loss is extremely misunderstood in our society so this frustration became the catalyst for me to gain the scholastic qualification to help other parents as they navigate through the wreckage of their lives and process their loss.
